Why It’s Important to Understand the Difference Between Sales And Marketing

Many people don’t realize that sales and marketing are two different things. It is important to understand the differences between the two if you want your company to be successful. Marketing is actually a broad category that includes the following:

  • Discovering what information, product or service consumers want.
  • Creating a product or service with the appropriate attributes.
  • Determining the prices and setting them accordingly.
  • Advertising the product and/or service.
  • Making a sale and giving the product to the customer.
  • Following up with the customer to make sure he or she is satisfied..

In other words, selling is only one aspect of marketing. The former involves persuading the customer to purchase a product, and the latter involves the activities used to make the sales. Obviously, the activities need to be undertaken in order to influence consumers to buy products. Even after sales are made, marketing still must continue in order to keep customers interested in the company.

It’s important to understand the concepts that surround sales and marketing techniques. Oftentimes, marketing requires the seller to listen to the consumer to get ideas on how to improve products or produce new ones. Selling involves helping the consumer decide on a selection of products that have already been produced.

The selling concept is centered on matching customer demand with products, whereas the marketing concept is all about discovering what type of products are required. This is essentially how sales and marketing differ from one another. Despite the differences, they are entirely dependent on one another. For instance, you won’t be able to create products to sell without marketing. Likewise, you won’t be able to earn money from the products after they’re created without the process of selling.

In order for your company to be successful, you need to assign specific tasks to certain employees. For instance, it’ll be a waste of time and money to have the sales people create a marketing campaign. Likewise, it’s not a good idea to have the marketing experts try to sell. You’ll be surprised at how many companies lose money due to failing to understand the differences between sales and marketing. Once you understand the differences, you will be able to make better decisions for your business.
